What Is This Plant

Astragalus membranaceus is a perennial herbaceous plant of the Fabaceae family, growing in the temperate regions of China, Mongolia and Korea. The root is used for medicinal purposes - typically from plants four years old and older. It is in the root that the main active compounds concentrate: polysaccharides, saponins and flavonoids. Among the saponins, astragaloside IV has attracted particular research attention.

Three Areas of Studied Activity

Immune support - the most studied area. Astragalus polysaccharides are studied in the context of regulating immune cell activity - particularly NK cells and macrophages. Adaptogenic activity - influence on the body's response to physical and psychological stress, supporting recovery after exertion. Cellular renewal - astragaloside IV is one of the few natural compounds studied in connection with telomerase activity - an enzyme involved in maintaining telomere length. Telomeres protect chromosomes from damage and their shortening is associated with cellular ageing processes. This is an active area of research with limited clinical evidence in humans - but the scientific significance of the topic makes Astragalus unique among plant adaptogens.

How to Use

Astragalus root powder can be consumed in three ways.

Brewing - the traditional and most effective method. Add 1 teaspoon (3-5g) to 200ml of hot water (90-95°C) and steep for 10-15 minutes. Extended steeping releases water-soluble polysaccharides and saponins - these compounds form the primary biological activity of the root. The taste is mild, slightly sweet with a characteristic legume note.

Stirring in water - a quick option for daily intake. Stir the powder into warm water and drink immediately. Less effective than brewing but convenient for regular use.

Adding to food - the powder can be added to soups, porridges or smoothies. When added to dishes undergoing heat treatment, part of the active compounds are released during cooking. 

Recommended dose: 1-2 teaspoons (3-5g) per day. Course from 4 weeks of daily intake.
