Ashwagandha is one of the key rasayanas of Ayurvedic medicine. Rasayana is a Sanskrit term for remedies that sustain vital force, slow ageing and restore the body after depletion. The Sanskrit name reveals the character of the root: "ashwa" - horse, "gandha" - smell - but not only the smell, strength and endurance too. In Ayurveda, Ashwagandha was prescribed to warriors for recovery after battle, to the elderly for maintaining vitality and to children for strengthening the body during growth. How does Ashwagandha work?
Adaptogenic activity and stress - the most studied area. Clinical studies document the influence on cortisol levels and subjective stress perception with regular intake. Ashwagandha is one of the few adaptogens with randomized clinical trials in humans.
Sleep quality - the influence on sleep onset and sleep depth is studied in the context of glycowithanolides - withanolide derivatives that interact with GABA receptors. Hence the Latin species name "somnifera" - sleep-bearing.

How to Use
With warm milk - the traditional Ayurvedic and most bioavailable method. Add 1 teaspoon (2-3g) of powder to 200ml of warm milk - dairy or plant-based. Add honey or cinnamon if desired. Milk fats increase the absorption of fat-soluble withanolides - this is where tradition and modern science align.
Brewing in water - add the powder to hot water (80-90°C) and steep for 5-10 minutes. The taste is earthy with a slight bitterness - characteristic of the root. Honey can be added.
Stirring in water or beverage - a quick option for daily intake. Add to warm water, smoothie or yogurt and stir.
Recommended dose: 1-2 teaspoons (2-4g) per day. Course from 4-8 weeks of daily intake - cumulative effect.
