What is gotu kola?

Gotu kola is a broad-leaved herb that grows in the wetlands of Africa, Australia, Asia, and the Pacific Islands. Its botanical name is Centella asiatica. In English-speaking countries, it is called "Indian centella" or "Asian centella", in Hindi it is called "mandukaparni" or "frog-paw leaf", in Tamil it is called "vallarai". In India, it is also known by the names "brahmi buti", "bua bok", and in Sri Lanka it is called "gotu kola".

This variety of local names is associated, among other things, with the healing properties of the plant, which is mentioned in Ayurveda as a means for "increasing the power of the mind." In Southeast Asia, fresh grass or powder of gotu kola is used as a tonic food additive to rice, curries, salads, or is used to prepare refreshing drinks and healing herbal teas.

Gota contains a complex of trisaccharides, saponins (in particular, pentacyclic triterpenoids), centellose, centelloside and madecassoside, and other active substances that determine the beneficial effects of the herb on the human and animal body.
