What is Sanghuang mushroom?

Sanghuang is the Korean name for the tinder fungus Phellinus linteus of the Hymenochaetaceae family. In China, it is known as "son gen" and "son hwan", in Japan it is called "meshimakobu", and in English-language literature there are variants: meshima mushroom or black hoof mushroom. The latter variant reflects the characteristic hoof-shaped shape of the fruiting body, the color of which can be black or light brown. It grows on trees, mostly of the mulberry family. It is used in traditional medicine in the Asian region.

Useful properties

Sanghuang mushroom in Chinese traditional medicine has a wide range of uses: diarrhea, gastrointestinal dysfunction, angina, diabetes, cancer. Preparations based on the mixture are known for their hemostatic, anti-inflammatory and wound healing effects. • polysaccharides - a group of components that demonstrate an immunomodulatory effect and activity against oncological diseases, have a positive effect on lipid balance, the condition of the gastrointestinal tract, and general immunity (the medical application of β-d-glucans and polysaccharide peptides is especially promising);
• Proteoglycans are complex proteins with polysaccharide chains that play an important role in connective tissue at the cellular level, form a lubricating layer in the joints, and are participants in the bone formation system.
• Triterpenoids are a group of substances known for their antibacterial, wound-healing, and antiviral properties, which is why they are used not only in medical preparations, but also in cosmetics.

The fruit body contains carbohydrates (95.4% of dry weight), proteins (2.8%), ash (1.3%) and a small amount of fat (less than 0.5%), represented by saturated and unsaturated fatty acids in a ratio of approximately 58%:42% of the total amount. The content of vitamin E (α- and γ-tocopherol) is recognized as interesting from the point of view of medical use, especially as an antioxidant to counteract peroxidation. Also present in the composition are ergosterol, ampicillin, streptomycin, bifosanol, ketocosanol, ellipticine, etc.
