Moringa
What is moringa (Moringa oleifera)?
Moringa oleifera is a tree of the Moringaceae family that grows in warm, sunny regions of Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The leaves of cultivated plants, pod-shaped fruits with round seeds, flowers, and roots are used as food. The name "moringa" comes from the shape of the young fruits, which means "twisted pod" in Tamil. The botanical "prefix" oleifera translates as "oil-bearing," which characterizes the composition of the seeds and leaves.
Moringa has gained its greatest culinary use thanks to its leaves, which are not only eaten raw, but also stored by drying in the sun or in an oven at temperatures up to 60 °C and grinding into powder. It is used as a food additive, added to dairy products, pastries, soups or sauces. Traditionally, fresh parts of the moringa plant and dried powder mixtures are used in folk medicine and are mentioned in "Ayurveda" as effective remedies for many diseases.
