What is Spirulina?

Spirulina is a specially prepared mixture of cyanobacteria (photosynthetic blue-green algae) of the genus Arthrospira, in particular the species A. Platensis and A. Maxima. The commercial name of the product is sometimes extended to the algae themselves, which naturally live in salty and alkaline waters of the subtropics and tropics, most often in lakes in Africa, Asia, South America, Mexico and California. For industrial use, cyanobacterial cultures are grown in open ponds and closed systems.

According to the International Energy Agency, 10,000 tons of dried spirulina are produced annually in the world. The reason for this interest was the high nutritional value of this supplement, especially the increased amount of protein. This was noticed by the ancient Aztecs, who collected "tequitlatl" (cyanobacterial cakes) from Lake Texcoco, actively using them in food as a rich source of nutrients. In the 1960s, the nutritional value of spirulina was noticed in Japan, and in the 80s-90s of the last century, the space agencies ESA and NASA considered spirulina as a potentially nutrient-rich product suitable for cultivation in long-term space flights. By the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, a boom in the industrial cultivation of algae of the genus Arthrospira began, the catalyst for which was the popularity of natural and healthy food products. Spirulina is also added to food products and cosmetics to protect the skin.

Useful properties of spirulina for the body

The benefits of Spirulina for the body are due to its chemical composition and easy digestibility. In dried form, the algae contain:

  • protein - from 63% to 68% (20-400 times higher than in soy, corn, beef);
  • polyunsaturated fatty acids - from 1.5% to 2%;
  • vitamins (β-carotene, B1, B3, etc.);
  • minerals (magnesium - 3.3 g/kg, calcium - 1.2 g/kg, phosphorus - 1.3 g/kg, etc.);
  • photosynthetic pigments (c-phycocyanin, chlorophyll).

First of all, spirulina algae is considered a nutritional supplement rich in nutrients. It is used both in its natural form and as an ingredient in beverages, sports nutrition, bakery, confectionery and other products. In addition to its nutritional value, official science is studying the potential medicinal benefits of cyanobacteria for the treatment and prevention of various diseases. Bioactive compounds obtained from spirulina have therapeutic effects, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial and other effects. For example, c-phycocyanin C-PC is in demand in the pharmaceutical industry and as a component of functional foods due to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective and neuroprotective properties. Spirulina-based proteins are used as the main supplement for the growth of children, for pregnant women, for women during lactation, are part of weight loss diets, etc.
