Danshen - Salvia miltiorrhiza - Chinese sage root with over two thousand years of use in traditional Chinese medicine. One of the most studied plant remedies for cardiovascular support - and one of the few where clinical evidence in humans confirms traditional use. The red coloration of the root - hence the folk name "red root" - is due to tanshinones, unique diterpenoid compounds absent in other sage species. Root powder preserves the complete natural matrix - tanshinones, salvianolic acids, fiber and all accompanying compounds of the root. Unlike extract, powder is not a standardized product - but preserves the holistic chemical profile in its primary state.
How Danshen Works
Circulation and microcirculation - Danshen tanshinones and salvianolic acids are studied in the context of supporting microcirculation and vascular tone. One of the most studied areas with an extensive clinical evidence base.
Cardiovascular support - the influence on blood pressure and cardiac muscle function is studied. Danshen is among the plants with the most documented cardiovascular profile in Chinese phytotherapy.
Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity - tanshinones are studied as potent antioxidants influencing the production of pro-inflammatory mediators at the cellular level.
Neuroprotection - a secondary but researched area. The influence on cognitive function and neuronal support from oxidative stress is studied.
How to Use
The optimal form of consumption is brewing as a tea. Add 1 teaspoon (2-4g) of powder to hot water (90-95°C) and steep for 10-15 minutes. Extended steeping promotes the transition of tanshinones and salvianolic acids into solution - this is how traditional Danshen root decoctions were prepared. The powder can also be stirred into warm water and consumed immediately or added to dishes undergoing heat treatment.
Recommended dose: 2-4g per day. Take with meals - this improves absorption of fat-soluble tanshinones. Danshen combines well with other products in the lineup - for example with Astragalus for comprehensive immune and vascular support or with Reishi for enhanced antioxidant profile. A specific combined intake regimen should be agreed with a specialist.
